All About Amateur Radio or Ham Radio
Did you know … that the confusion of the communications that followed Hurricane Katrina was avoidable? It was not a question of FEMA or drowned buses.
The facts may surprise you. Technology available and virtually untapped United Nations, refers to "the mainstream press'. I never heard a word about a simple solution, available from the beginning.
E 'was hired as a field of Katrina on the Gulf Coast, like a chain saw, which "would not be so bad."
But before and after the devastation of New Orleans, the situation in Mississippi and Alabama, had deteriorated to a disaster of biblical proportions quickly. This disaster has not been reported, including much of the outside world, outside the local area of devastation caused by the wind. Few or none of them realized that the phone and radio towers, including many amateur (HAM) were not able to function.
The method "normal" communication, after a devastating storm like Katrina, as seen after Hurricane Andrew, and police and fire mobile units, amateur radio, and news crews as they make their way into disaster areas .
After Andrew in South Florida counties have been ground so that most people assume that their premises a few blocks were the most affected and the help came from areas of lesser damage. So after dawn Monday morning it became evident through reports of helicopters, an unprecedented disaster that had happened.
Some reports have been obtained through the airwaves. Some amateur radio operators and police and fire have done damage to local report. Again, none of these people had no idea how they were bad. Many people and organizations in these reports were intended should normally be themselves in a desperate situation. Even Homestead Air Force Base has been paralyzed, which was later sunk assessed Air Force Base.
We now return to the Gulf Coast in thirteen years later Monday morning. The storm drove away with the help of hurricane winds over 20 miles inland in some areas. While early evacuation saved countless lives along the Gulf Coast, nothing could protect the infrastructure of cities, counties and states. Much of the highway system have been eliminated so that even the National Guard can not get all their heavy equipment into the hardest hit areas to dig for survivors. Interstate highways were unusable for miles.
Satellite Phone GSM: Consider a scenario in which at least civil defense organizations, the National Guard, FEMA, police, sheriffs and firefighters, especially 'the first response had been prepared for satellite phones. Consider also in this scenario that emergency planning and training had gone first to use a combination of satellite phones and mobile radios that can work without a repeater in a common frequency in general.
The obstacles inherent in a situation of emergency mass could be recognized and overcome much earlier, after the worst of Katrina had passed. Cell Phones with the following (the new), and co-sharing the radio frequency of a virtual tower of Babel was minimal coordinated communications between the scene and from outside.
Something as simple as telling a National Guard convoy that "could not have come from there would help a lot. Mobile Satellite
That helps no one to look back and find guilt beyond to learn from our mistakes. One of the conclusions about the state of communication is that of a satellite phone equipment minimum standard for organizations of civil defense. Mobile phones are fine for normal use, but are based on a strong local infrastructure such as local power. There are heaps of course, depending on the charge, of course. Satellite phones are in the range of private use and have the same features available in "mobile" in everyday use.
Satellite phones have been around for a few years ago. They are used in the Persian Gulf, with great effect. It would be criminal, after "year of the hurricane," not to press for the inclusion of satellite phone technology throughout the planning. This is the case of cities in state and federal.
